What Is a Tax Stamp?

Learn what a tax stamp is and why it’s required when purchasing NFA items such as silencers and short-barreled rifles.

Updated over 3 weeks ago

A suppressor tax stamp is a federal tax paid to the U.S. government for the legal purchase of NFA (National Firearms Act) items, including silencers, short-barreled rifles (SBRs), and machine guns.

This tax is required by the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) as part of the approval process for all Form 4 submissions.

Starting January 1st 2026, under the Big Beautiful Bill, all tax stamps will be included at no additional cost — making the effective tax stamp price $0 on all new orders.
