Free state customers (suppressors and AOWs from Silencer Shop): As of August 13, 2026, you do not need to wait for ATF Form 4 approval. Once your suppressor ships to your selected dealer, simply complete a 4473 and pass a NICS background check and take it home — same as buying a rifle or handgun.
Note: Individual dealers in free states may still choose to use the NFA/Form 4 process instead of the GCA process. Always confirm with your dealer before proceeding.
NFA state customers and all SBR/SBS purchases: The Form 4 process still applies. You can pick up your item after ATF approval as described below.
States that treat suppressors as NFA items include AK, CO, CT, GA, MI, MS, MT, NV, NC, ND, OH, OR, PA, WA, and WI.
If you are in an NFA state or purchasing an SBR/SBS, you can pick up your suppressor after the ATF approves your Form 4. The ATF will send an approval email directly to you and your selected dealer.
Once you receive that approval email, contact your dealer to verify the approval and schedule a pickup appointment. At pickup, be prepared to show a valid government-issued photo ID (e.g., driver’s license or passport) so the dealer can complete the transfer.
Note: Silencer Shop does not receive ATF approval notifications — your dealer will confirm the approval and finalize the transfer. We recommend giving your dealer time to prepare for the transfer of the item.

Dealers in free states have the discretion to choose between the GCA and NFA/Form 4 processes. If your dealer requires a Form 4, you can still process it through Silencer Shop with your selected FFL. Additionally, customers in free states can switch to a dealer that offers GCA transfers if preferred.
