Tax Stamps: What's Required for Your NFA Purchase?

Explains how to purchase and apply a tax stamp for an NFA Item.

As of January 1, 2026, the tax stamp fee for suppressors, SBRs, SBSs, and AOWs is $0. Silencer Shop adds it automatically — you don't need to do anything extra at checkout. Machine Guns and Destructive Devices still require a $200 transfer tax.

As of August 13, 2026, for customers in free states purchasing suppressors or AOWs that originated from Silencer Shop, the registration requirement behind the tax stamp is also gone — no Form 4, no wait, no ATF registration. Only a 4473 and NICS background check are required. In NFA states, a Form 4 is still required under state law. SBRs and SBSs still require a Form 4 in all states.

Suppressors, SBRs, SBSs, and AOWs — $0 Tax Stamp

No action is required from you at checkout. When you purchase one of these NFA items through Silencer Shop, the tax stamp is automatically included in your order. For customers in free states buying suppressors or AOWs from Silencer Shop, no Form 4 is filed — you complete a 4473 and NICS check at your dealer and take it home. For customers in NFA states or those buying SBRs/SBSs, the Form 4 is still filed on your behalf as part of the transfer process.

Machine Guns and Destructive Devices — $200 Transfer Tax

These NFA items still require a $200 transfer tax. Silencer Shop does not sell tax stamps for Machine Guns or Destructive Devices. You will need to purchase the tax stamp directly through your firearm dealer as part of the NFA transfer process.
