What Is a Form 4?

Understand what an ATF Form 4 is and how it’s used to transfer ownership of an NFA item between parties.

A Form 4 (Application for Tax Paid Transfer and Registration of Firearm) is the ATF form used to transfer an existing NFA item from one party to another — typically from a dealer (FFL) to an individual or trust. Commonly used for Suppressor purchases.

As of August 13, 2026: For suppressors and AOWs purchased from Silencer Shop in free states, a Form 4 is no longer required — customers only need a 4473 and NICS background check. The Form 4 process still applies in NFA states and for SBRs and SBSs in all states. See our NFA Ruling FAQ for the full state-by-state breakdown.
